Nactal Tablet

Nactal Tablet is a two-component mucolytic and expectorant formulation combining the distinct mechanisms of acetylcysteine and ambroxol for comprehensive airway mucus management.

Acetylcysteine (NAC) is a thiol-containing amino acid derivative with direct mucolytic and antioxidant properties. It cleaves the disulfide bonds that cross-link mucus glycoproteins, reducing the viscosity and elasticity of mucus and facilitating its expectoration. Additionally, acetylcysteine is a precursor to glutathione, the principal intracellular antioxidant, and provides cytoprotective benefit to airway epithelial cells exposed to oxidative stress from inflammation and infection.

Ambroxol is a metabolite of bromhexine and a well-established secretolytic and expectorant agent. It stimulates the synthesis and secretion of pulmonary surfactant from type II pneumocytes, which reduces surface tension in the alveoli and small airways, improving lung compliance and facilitating mucus transport. Ambroxol also stimulates serous gland secretion, increases the water content of mucus, and enhances mucociliary activity, improving the efficiency of the mucociliary escalator in clearing mucus from the bronchial tree.

It also increases serous secretions from bronchial glands, raises the water content of mucus, and stimulates ciliary beat frequency, collectively enhancing mucociliary transport and airway clearance.
