Deferiprone is used in the treatment of iron overload and transfusion-dependent thalassemia.

How Deferiprone works: Deferiprone binds to and removes excess iron, which is then primarily excreted in the stools. This process reduces the risk of organ damage.

Common side effects of Deferiprone include fatigue, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, joint pain, and diarrhea.

- Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms such as fever, sore throat, or flu, as deferiprone can cause neutropenia (a decrease in white blood cells) or agranulocytosis (an abnormal decrease in white blood cell count).

- Your blood will need to be tested weekly while you are taking this medication.
- Deferiprone may cause urine to appear reddish-brown in color; this side effect is normal and typically not harmful.
